• Hey there Everyone.

So I have been working on a theme, making changes and additions. And then I was reading about using a child theme to do this, so that the theme can update without me loosing all my alterations to the code.

So, I’m wondering, if one has already gotten as far as me, can I make an exact copy of my current site as a Child to itself?

Then I would continue working on my changes, but in the Child theme. Maybe even update/revert/reinstall the Parent theme back to it’s original state before I even touched it.

    Thanks for the advice!

  • Sort of – what theme and which files have you modified? And when you switch to a new theme (child or otherwise) theme settings and options don’t necessarily transfer – so you’ll have to redo those anyway.

It was a purchased theme from ThemeForest, “The Cause”

Dang! Does anyone have a suggestion to accomplish this task?

There is no way to do it without redoing some work. First you should make sure the theme will work with a child theme – some won’t. So create a child theme per https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Child_Themes

Make sure it’s working (post back and someone here can check it for you) and then we can go on to moving stuff to the child theme.
