I am just trying to find out:

if I were to build a child theme on wordpress.com using a parent theme that is also available on www.ads-software.com if that child theme would be able to transfer over to a www.ads-software.com site if I wanted to upgrade in the future.

    Thanks for your help

  • You can’t make a child theme on .COM – there is no file level access to modify files there.

But lots of people DO move from .COM to self-hosted – it does mean some work, but it’s totally doable :).

One other thing to know is that the same theme on .COM is not usually totally identical to the version on .ORG – as .COM generally modifies themes to work on their network.

But all of those factors really aren’t a bit deal once you know how to use WP — it’s just some time and effort and learning a few new things about self-hosted sites.

Your right I was referring to the Custom Cascading Style Sheet that you can create with the $30 upgrade. Sorry

Generally that probably would not work – or not entirely – because of the differences in MOST themes between .COM and .ORG versions of even the same theme. CSS is totally theme and site specific. But it would not be hard to try it though…you’d just need to copy the custom CSS from the .COM site into a child theme style.css file – and you’d immediately know what worked!
