• Hey guys, I’m developing my site on a subdomain and will need to move it to a main domain later. I know this question has been asked many times and I’ve done my research, and realize that this is the definitive guide here: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Moving_WordPress

I’m not sure how shipping plugins and API integration works. If I have shipping plugins, are there any extra steps I need to take? Will I have issues with my UPS and USPS if my move my subdomain to a main domain? Do I need to call them up and tell them my new domain, get new APIs, etc?

    Please advise, thanks!

  • Usually how these plugin APIs work is by ID number provided by them to you (not always needed), not the domain name.

Does not involve permalinks or anything either?

It’s like when you don’t know cars, and how all the parts effect each other, or which parts work independently. That’s how I feel right now with all this website stuff.

If you change domain or URL for the main WP, you do have to change it (the core, not the UPS or USPS API), please refer to:

    Can you clarify…

For example, I’m developing my site on a subdomain, shop.example.com. When I’m done, I want to drop the shop, so it’s just example.com.

My understanding is that I have to move all the files from shop.example.com to example.com, correct?

Which situation do I fall under?

    A. When Your Domain Name and URLs Do Not Change
    or
    B. When Your Domain Name or URLs Change

FYI, example.com also has wordpress and other themes installed in it, but it’s not important. Prior to transferring all my files from shop.example.com, I should delete everything in example.com, correct?

It will be “B”. Yes, you should delete everything from example.com. You can just leave shop.example.com as is to use it as development site to test any design changes before applying to your main site at example.com.

Just copy all the files and don’t forget to copy the database too. This plugin will help you cloning the site.

Okay, thank you so much for your help!

You are welcome, have a nice day!

Hmmm that plugin you mentioned, does that mean I don’t have to follow the codex.wordpress instructions?

Yes, that plugin will create a zip file for you, and a php file for installation. It’s much eaiser than wordpress instructions.
