Permalinks: Basic

    Hello. First post and new to blogging. Thank you for your patience:
    I am designing a website for a client. The client needs to regularly update information on the site but does not have the budget to employ a web administrator. I think hybridizing WP (I’ve checked out the competition) and Gallery is the appropriate solution in this case. The problem is…
    Some of the information must persist longer than the archive date. Am I correct in presuming that this is the function of a permalink? Does this mean that when the category or subcategory is selected in the menu, posts designated as permalinks will always appear there?
    I also noticed in the WP administrative section that permalinks require mod_rewrite. Unfortunately, it is not installed on the client’s host. Is there a workaround for this?

    Permalinks links are actualy PERMAnent LINKS…. meaning that the link for that post will never change. It doesn’t matter the format of the permalink. even …/index.php?p=123 is a type of permalink. It’s simply a link to that post (#123 in this case) that will always get you to that post, no matter what. Most of us prefer the “user friendly” version of /archives/2004/02/24/post_title because it looks nice. IT doesn’t serve any real other purpose, other than /archives/2004/02/24 will also get you other posts for that same day, as would …index.php?year=2004&month=02&day=24 ….
    The posts never go anywhere. Unless the database gets deleted. Or the posts get deleted. From the calendar or the archives links, there will always be a way to get to the posts. The reason for permalinks is in distribution. Links from other sites to yours will always be able to reach any given post with a permalink.

    Thanks. I determined that just before I read your post and realized that I had not asked the right question:
    How can I force a post to persist at the top of the listings without having to change the creation date? For example, if I create, say, a yearly schedule of events under an “Events” category. Is it possible to force that post always to appear as the first entry in that category. Can this be done by putting a category/subcategory link within a link tag?

    OOhh… simple… um goto the Wiki (a link is under the Docs link at the top) and click the section fo WP Hacks. The one you’re going to be interested in is the “Sticky” hack. Follow the instructions carefully. You can then set posts to be “Sticky” which will cause them to float to the top every time.
