Customizer – edit options

I am trying to reduce the number of options in customizer … and also create some new options in my child theme?…
I have tried following this tutorial -> https://ottopress.com/2012/how-to-leverage-the-theme-customizer-in-your-own-themes/ …
But it doesn’t add anything to the customizer options, I was wondering if I am writing to the wrong options array, my child theme is called bhq1 and I was trying to write to the the_bootstrap_theme_options[] and bhq1_theme_options[] arrays to no avail
