[Theme: Status] FlexSlider gallery implementation

Hi there – am having trouble implementing the FlexSlider plugin on Portfolio pages of the Status theme.

The gallery displays all images uploaded to the post in the media library, including the featured image. This is obviously a smaller image not made to be blown up to feature size, so am wondering how to specify more directly which images are used in the slider plugin?
