• I’m thinking of using woocommerce on my WordPress site to set up a small online store that will accept credit cards on shared hosting, but I’m confused about what’s needed, ie, the Mijireh Checkout comes with it, a payment gateway and a merchant account with my bank. Is this correct? I understand what each does, but does Mijireh not act as a payment gateway or do I need both? What’s the difference between a checkout and a payment gateway? Thanks.

    Anyone?

Mijireh helps with processing payment that is what you want to use, or your can use any of over 80 different payment processing methods. Easiest is probably PayPal standard, which comes with WooCommerce, or if you’d rather not use PayPal then there many other options. For example, you can get an account at Stripe.com and use them to handle processing credit card charges – no formal merchant account required since Stripe handles this for you.

Ok, so I don’t need to use Mijireh if I go with Stripe? I’ve got confused because Mijireh is called a ‘checkout’ not a payment gateway, making me think you need Mijireh as well?

You don’t need Mijireh, it’s just an option you can use, or not.

Ok thanks. Stripe has only just launched beta here in the UK, are there any others like Stripe where you don’t even need a merchant account?

PayPal offers the ability to accept credit cards through any of their account types. Not sure who else might be available in the UK.
