Mask wordpress in url

I am new to wordpress and very impressed with the features.
The issue I have is wordpress is installed in its own folder wordpress. I want to keep it out of my root folder so it remains clean. But when you browse to my website it is https://www.domain.co.uk/wordpress, I want it to be https://www.domain.co.uk basically mask the wordpress in the url.

I have followed https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory but used the second section and updated the settings, copied both and amended index.php and .htaccess in the main part of my site. checked permalinks and I now get error 404 not found.
