I have tried different ways that were discussed in earlier posts but haven’t had any luck. I am able to get the dialog box to come up asking for username and password but after that I get an error. I even tried putting the folder outside of the WordPress folder and it still doesn’t work.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Have you tried doing it through your hosts cpanel?

Sort of, not with a cpanel, but in file management I added a password. The problem is the placement of the file and how to call it. I haven’t figured out the correct way to do it.

not exactly sure what you mean? What file?

Sorry, folder. I have a folder that I want password protected and in it is a page with a list of PDFs that can be clicked on for download.

Your cpanel should have a button that says password protect directories. What host are you on?

It is password protected. The problem is getting it called correctly from the menu. I use pairNetworks.

Ok, I think I understand. Are you able to login fine, and the problem only comes up when you are trying to view a particular pdf?

No, the problem is actually accessing the folder. I can get the dialog box up and to enter username and password and then I get an error message saying contact the server people.

After you input the user credentials?

I’m sorry, I’m hot and tired and I have tried so many permutations that at this point I can’t remember all that I did and what the consequences were. Suffice it to say that I either end up getting into the folder without having to enter the password or I can’t get passed entering the username and password and getting an error.

And, to make matters worse, I have to reboot each time I enter the username and password. My computer accepts that I am allowed in unless I reboot.

well thats a pain in the ass. Quick fix for that might be google incognito mode.

Are you setting the password with an .htpasswd file or what?

    Thread Starter laurelbj

    (@laurelbj)

    Yes, with an .htpasswd file.

    (@timothyblynjacobs)

Well I just tested it on my domain and got it to work. What did your host say?

    (@laurelbj)

Please tell me where you folder is located in your WordPress folders and what you used to call it from your menu?

    Timothy Jacobs

    (@timothyblynjacobs)

I’m not calling anything from my menu but i have

    -hidden
    –.htaccess
    –.htpasswd
    -wp-content
    etc…
