404 error when adding new page or post

    Hi,
    I recently upgraded to wp 3.5.2 and changed my theme. Now, when I add a new page or post, or even try to view old pages (except for one), I get this 404-Error message:

    “Page Not Found
    The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please try the following:

    If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.
    Click the Back button in your browser to try another link.
    Use a search engine like Google to look for information on the Internet.”

    I tried the suggestion to update the .htaccess file, suggested here: but this didn’t work for me. Any other suggestions? (NB: I’m still something of a novice though, so I don’t want to mess anything up either, ie MySQL sort of scares me as I don’t want to knock anything out of commission accidentally)

    Here is link to my site. You’ll see that when you click on About or Home, everything is fine. When you click on Contact, you get the 404 message. I am refraining from recreating my content from the old theme until I get this fixed.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    – re-saving your permalinks

    I had tried everything except resetting plugins (which I just did) and re-uploading all files and folders. Nothing worked, so I will try uploading all files and folders now. How do I delete everything except the wp-content folder if I am uninstalling and reinstalling wordpress? Haven’t done it before, so want to make sure I get this right…

    You’re not re-installing WordPress. You’re just uploading fresh copies of core files.

    1. Delete the wp-admin folder.
    2. Upload a fresh copy of the wp-admin folder.
    3. Delete the wp-includes folder.
    4. Upload a fresh copy of the wp-includes folder.
    5. Delete all files in the root of your WordPress install with the exception of the wp-config.php and the .htaccess file (if you have one).
    6. Upload fresh copies of these files from the main wordpress folder.

    this has to be done from File Manager? And is re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes equivalent to reinstalling the theme?

    If you do not have access to your own FTP software, yes.

    No. That has nothing to do with themes.

    Okay, I deleted and reuploaded the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from my ftp site. Now, before I delete the wrong thing, which are the root files of the WordPress install I should be deleting? Is it all the blank sheets listed under the folders in wordpressprimary? eg. .htaccess.bak, index.php, license.txt, readme.html, wp-activate.php etc??

    Have a look at the list of files in the root of the wordpress folder that you downloaded. Those are the files that you need to delete on your remote server and then upload fresh copies of.

    I don’t think I understand the language and am afraid to delete the wrong thing. Could you advise where I’d look for that?

    I only see .htaccess in that folder…?

    Oh I get you now! Ok, I’ve done that as well and still having the problem. Should I have reset something first? Or could the problem be something else?

    Have you tried re-running the upgrade manually using https://your-site/wp-admin/upgrade.php?

    Hi esmi,
    Thank you for all of your help – I realize my silly mistake now: I had changed my site address in General (not the wordpress address url, the other one). I also learned here that there is a way to do this, but not the way I tried. Thanks again!
