Having trouble adding smooth slider to Elegant Themes Modest template

Smooth Slider template tag keeps breaking my site – I want the slider to be on my home page – this template uses home.php – but it also has a main index.php – and a featured.php which is the featured posts – this is what I want to show in the slider on the home page. I disabled the current slider they are using through their c-panel options but cannot determine where to put template tag.
I added it one at a time to the above php files – kept breaking site.
