Our university is interested in adding user groups and access control to our content. We are currently evaluating this plugin. Anyone using this plugin on a large scale? If so, can you provide some numbers and feedback?

We will have a WP multisite instance with 20k active users; registered users will be much larger. We will have at least 2k groups and each user will belong in around 200 groups. We will need to customize/modify the plugin to fit our needs as there is no way we will manage groups through the WP console. We will programmatically manage user groups.

Any feedback, especially from the author =)

Have a look at the approach taken here https://www.itthinx.com/2013/02/21/groups-forums-performance/

And I would at least set up a test site replicating the one where you intend to use it.

FYI – We are an enterprise with different requirements than typical users. I made a lot of changes to Groups plugin to meet our needs. Yes I realize we can no longer update the plugin. Unfortunately our changes are probably not useful to most users; and really not shareable since I modified core functions =( I can describe the changes if interested.

I did some preliminary testing to see how one blog site performs with and without the group plugin. The decrease in performance was nominal. This was on a very sparsely populated blog but each page of the blog had multiple acls (10+).

In short, we are happy with the performance of this plugin.
