Does UpDraft plus interact with wp-cron.php?

    In the past 2 weeks we have been having a lot of server downtime and our host’s support claims it is because of Cron scripts that are running across the domains. We recently installed UpdraftPlus across all our domains; does it interact with wp-cron.php in anyway/could it be at all related to our problem (which ultimately leads to Internal Server errors and Fatal Errors (“Allowed memory exhausted”).

    Any insight is appreciated.

    Hi Amanda,

    wp-cron.php is the WordPress scheduling system, and hence is used by everything that wants to schedule anything (in this case, backups).

    Thank you for that article David.
    So you are confirming that UpDraft Plus uses wp-cron.php?
    A lot of our host’s techs are suggesting that we get a caching plugin. Would that help with the overload?

    Hi Amanda,

    Yes, it does. Talking about wp-cron.php is synonymous with talking about WordPress’s scheduled task system. There’s only one.

    Cacheing plugins do help with site load, yes – typically they reduce the time needed for each normal page by about two-thirds. However, whether that’ll solve your problem depends on whether the major bulk of the site load is ordinary pages, or the backup run. (They really shouldn’t be having a problem with the backup run, if you’ve scheduled it to run in the small hours – you should ask the host what hour their server is least loaded, so that you can check you’re scheduling it at the best time for them).
