upload images chmod 766 wont work

I don’t know if anyone else has had this problem, but setting the chmod to 766 on my upload images folder doesn’t work – I have to set it to 777. My host says he’s quite happy with the folder (which I’ve placed outside my wordpress directory) to have that setting but I don’t know that it’s an ideal situation.
