resize main slider?

Have you tried resizing and or cropping the originals using something like Irfanview before uploading them to WP. Images about 1,140px × 475px look pretty good.

Yeah it will resize more or less automatically if you simply adjust the size of the original. I’ve got 1140 X 225 running on my site here:
