Sub-folders vs sub-domains

    I have several sections to my website, each needing different functionality. To avoid an overload of plugins, I’ve created each section as a sub-domain, like this:

    bellydanceoz.com
    events.bellydanceoz.com
    shop.bellydanceoz.com

    It works, but I’ve read advice which says I should be using sub-folders instead of sub-domains. Happy to do that (I can 301 redirect the sub-domains), but how do I create sub-folders?
