• I moved a site to a new server. The site looks and functions properly, but when we try to change custom headers we are able to select the new header, but when we try to preview or save the post the header goes away.
Wordpress 3.6, theme is Promotion. PHP 5.3 all running on Server 2008 R2 and IIS 7.5. I can’t find any errors, but in fairness I’m not a WordPress guru. I’m assuming it’s a permissions problem, but I can’t find the solution. I’ve disabled all plug-ins, changed back to the 2012 Theme and altered access permissions to the website files. Nothing has changed with any of these things.

I can update text, just not the graphics.

  • There are URLs and paths stored in the database in ‘serialized’ form. You must use special tools to search and replace the old values with the new ones. If this is not done properly, many different problems can result.

If the old site is still available, you can use the steps shown in this article to copy the site: https://wordpress.mcdspot.com/2012/08/22/migrating-a-wordpress-site-step-by-step/

If the old site is not available, and you still have a copy of the database from that site, you should be able to use this tool to make the changes: https://interconnectit.com/products/search-and-replace-for-wordpress-databases/

Thanks for the response. Just to make sure, this holds true if the URL stayed the same when the site moved servers and the site is operating correctly except for what I explained above, correct? If so, I’ll back everything up and give it a shot.

I think this may be specific to your theme. It really could be a permissions problem, but there is no way I can be sure.

According to this Codex article, you should not have to modify the database contents if the URL and Domain name remain the same. However, some themes and plugins use their own unique folders for storage, and may have stored absolute path names which would probably be different.

If you still have access to both sites, you can install the WP Migrate DB plugin in both and compare the paths it discovers. Then you could use this tool to search and replace in the new database. Be sure to back it up first!

Unfortunately, I don’t have access to the old site. The server’s been taken offline.

I’m not the person who maintains the site and I wasn’t told they were having this issue for about 2 months after it had been moved.

Then the only other option I know is to browse the sql dump of the database looking for paths. Maybe something like ‘/home/…’.

Thanks. I’ll see what I can do.

I give up. I’ll go back to the designers and see if they can figure it out.

    Thanks for your help.
