HTML Editor – Help I;m about to give up!

  • For the life of me I can’t get the stock HTML editor in WordPress to do what I tell it to. It edits my code as soon as I update it, which is massively annoying and I can’t understand why it would be implimented to behave this way.

    I’ve figured out that the rich text editor will format any code – I’m talking about the (annoying limited) HTML window that appears when you hit the button on the RT editor.

    I am trying to add in line breaks (or paras, whatever would work) between dark photographs and text that my theme seems to automatically remove in spite of me putting them in.

    But even by using the HTML editor to explicitly add break or paras as tags, simply by using the UPDATE key it is saved to the page – but not as I have written it. Often the new tags simply disapear at this stage, or they get turned into garbage when the page is published.

    I’ve used a few offline packages to edit the pages the way I want them but that often seems to create new problems, when they do their own formating, and the format of a post breaks again if I ever forget and try to update it from WordPress.

    Is no-one else seeing this behaviour? I’ve done a search of the forums and seen nothing. I’ve switched off all options in my WordPress install I could find that might be post-editing my code but it still happens. And I notice that the HTML rendering of the page below the WordPress editor does not correspond to the appearance of the page when it is rendered in firefox, is this normal?

    Any help gratefully appreciated. Otherwise, recomendations for an offline package that will work nicely with wordpress would work – I’ve tried blogjet and blogdesk but still looking…

  • Sorry you feel that way. Hope someone can help you, be patient.

    At a minimum, if you really want to use the WP Wysiwyg editor, go to Options -> Writing and uncheck “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically”. Now it should be a bit more forgiving of what you feed it. maybe…

    However, why not just disable the Wysiwyg thing altogether?
    Users -> Your Profile. Scroll to the bottom and uncheck “Use the visual rich editor when writing”

    Yeah I’d missed the User option for rich text editing, which seems to override the global option which I had checked, until after I’d posted. That helped some. I’d experimented with the nested-XHTML option but that didn’t seem to change the problem. Now I have XHTML nesting off AND the User RT option off it seems to be working.

    I admit I’m a noob at this but I kind of expect an editor to write what I send it. Is it bad XHTML just to throw in in a <br />?

    But I did like to throw a post together with the RT editor – there seems to be no way to switch between them without the RT editor going to work on the code.

    Also, thanks for the quick response and help from you both!

    I’m having similar problems. Also, I hit the html edit button, try to make some changes, it I get the endless hour glass. Then I get a dialogue that says a script is making things slow, do I want to abort? If I say no it just keeps going. Any ideas? I need to try the above options changes to see if that helps the editing problem. Jim B.

    FF is notorious for the “Stop Script” dialogue. When it comes up – click yes.
