I have a local installation of wordpress and I am trying figure out how everything works. I found that I can let “Let Anybody Register” in Settings > General. This causes a “Register” link to appear under the sign-in box in the site.com/wp-admin.

However, clicking it sends me to a comment form. And even though I enter a name and email, it does not create a subscriber (default user).

Is this what is supposed to happen?
And if so, do I need a plugin in order to allow public registration?

    Thanks!

  • “Register” link…sends me to a comment form.

That does sound quite odd. Had you cleared your browser cache and cookies after having first logged out? And if so, what kinds of customizations have you made and/or what plugins have you added?

I think the most relevant plugin that I am using is buddypress.

I am not sure what triggered it, but a message recently popped up saying that I need to take “repair” actions. When I clicked the “repair” button, I was taken to the Settings > BuddyPress > Pages page and encouraged to create Registration and Activate pages.

After adding a registration page, I tried registering as a new user again, and this time I was presented with a registration page requesting name, email, password, etc.

So I guess this is how it works: If you don’t install BuddyPress, then the “Register” link re-purposes the admin login screen as a registration screen. But using BuddyPress you can design your own Registration page.

    Can you confirm this?
    Thanks!

I know nothing about BuddyPress, but yes it sounds like you are going to have to deal with that…

I never did resolve this. I just dropped BuddyPress. Too confusing, no support, very quirky.
