Custom post type reverts to the 404.php file

Set up custom post type, called ‘work’, and set up custom fields OK.
Duplicated the archive page to archive-work.php and single.php to single-work.php added <?php $custom = simple_cck::get_post_custom($post_id) ?> to the resepective templates.
Unfortunately post in the ‘work’ custom posts section will only show the 404.php error message.
Any ideas why?
