Static home suddenly displaying posts

I have had a static home page and separate post page set for some years. I removed the Posts page 3 weeks ago and the site has been working fine. But today the home page is being ignored and is displaying all posts. I have checked and rechecked all relevant settings concerning static pages, I have tried creating new pages for both – I have even checked all of my menus to ensure nothing was a miss.

Does anyone have a idea? I am at a loss to know what to do next!
