• I built an alphabetical drop-down menu on my site yokai.com this summer and had no trouble. However, this morning I went to add one link to the menu and the whole thing fell apart!

For some strange reason, the menu editor is now painfully slow when adding a menu item or moving/reordering menu items. It takes about 20 seconds for any change to register.

Worse, the menu editor deleted half of my menu! If you’ll look at the page, you can see the menu only goes from A to N now, instead of all the way to Z. All of the other menu items just got deleted! Very frustrating… I tried re-adding the lost items, and it took me a long time just to finish N due to the slowness, however, what’s worse is that saving it did nothing! The new items were lost all over again.

I haven’t added any plugins since this summer — the only thing that has changed is WP core has been updated one or two times to the newest version.

Is this a bug in WP, or has something else happened? Please help me, as without this menu my site is fairly crippled!

    – To rule out any theme-specific issue, try switching to the unedited default theme for a moment using the WP dashboard. If you don’t have access to your admin area, you can switch to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using via FTP or SFTP or whatever file management application your host provides. Alternately, you can remove other themes except the default theme. That will force your site to use it.

I just tried this and no luck. Changing the theme didn’t speed up the menu problem at all. In addition, I haven’t changed anything on my theme since it was working properly. The only thing I can think of is that something in one of the WP core updates has affected the menu. But whatever it is, I want to fix it as quickly as possible…

You are almost certainly hitting a custom menu limitation issue due to your server’s configuration.

    Thanks for the suggestion, esmi.

I contacted my hosting company and they told me this:

Increasing max_vars is not an option for your account, as suhosin is not enabled on your server. Also, there is no limits for max_input_vars on php configuration.

So, I think the suggestion that it is a custom menu limitation can’t be true. Also, as the menu was working perfectly only a couple of months ago when I last edited it, I think that can’t be the case. Last time I edited the menu, I was able to create 119 submenu items, organized under header menu items A through Z. Now I am only able to save A through N; anything after N doesn’t get saved, and it acts very slowly. I think something else must be wrong…
