how to display one post

This has got to be dead-simple which is why I can’t figure it out. I am making a template and I want to display one post on the front page. At first I was using the loop and thinking about the_date template tags and flow control… but there’s got to be a simpler way, yes?

How do I set up an index file that only displays the most recent post?
