large number of iamges and bulk optimizer

we have almost 300,000 images.
Is it possible to run the bulk optimizer; and if yes – will it change the file names? and also will it not crash the site for memory / cpu overload?
can we run the utilities direct from cpanel from commandline to optimize all images of the folder (and subfolders).
