HELP! Can't restore any of my back-ups!

  • Hi,

    I’m panicking a bit because I tried to do a test move of my WP install to copy it to a new domain but that failed and now I can’t restore any of my back ups!

    I’ve got three backups going back over the past few days but none of them will restore properly. I’ve tried restoring the databases through my No Limits Control Panel restore option and through phpMyAdmin and they restore without any errors. Then I ftp all the WP files associated with that database into the correct subdomain (where the settings will be telling the database to look) but I can’t access the site! I’ve tried with three different back-ups and their corresponding databases and two different methods of restoring the database.

    I’ve also checked the wp-config.php file and it’s definitely pointing to the right database with the right password.

    The access error log has entries like this:

    Does anyone have any ideas at all?? I’m really starting to worry now!! Please help if you can!

  • Have you read through https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Moving_WordPress ?

    Are your wp-config.php settings correct for the new domain?

    Did you clean up all serialized database data using a tool like Velvet Blues Update URLs plugin?

    Potentially your import contains the data specific to the old domain and you will need to update it to reflect the new domain you’re moving it to.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the reply. Maybe I wasn’t very clear in my original post; when moving the install to the new domain failed, I aborted that as it was only a test run and went back to my other backups of the site for the original domain. I had to try and restore one of these as I’d changed the settings to try and move domain as per the instructions on: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Moving_WordPress (Moving to a new server). I followed these steps to the letter, but now I can’t restore the pre-move-attempt backups to the original domain.

    Should I be using a tool like Velvet Blues if I just want to restore the original install on the original domain??

    I’ve got three backups going back over the past few days and I’ve tried to restore two of these with the same result, you can see this reflected in the change in the server error log between 11:48 and 12:02 when I switched to trying a different back up.

    I have Better WP Security and WP https plug-ins installed. Is there any reason these would stop me restoring a backup??
