    Hi All,

I have recently upgraded Word Press to v3.6.1 and was quite alarmed that I could no longer access my site.

Using the very useful information I found in other posts I have been able to access the site and come very close to establishing what the problem is.

I use a plugin called Member Access, which basically protects pages, posts and other content on your site and will either display a 404 error or redirect the user to your choice of page if they are not logged in and try and access something which is for logged in users only.

I used to plugin to protect everything on my site apart from the home page, and told it to redirect users back to the home page if they clicked something to which they did not have access. The home page contained text explaining people needed to login or register.

Now it seems that the plugin is unable to redirect people to my choice of page, instead – what ever page I pick it eventually comes up with the too many redirects message. Even if I pick a new page and try to redirect to that.

It is a very old plug in but an essential part of my site now.

I have got around the problem by selecting the plugin to display 404 error page if the user clicks something protected and they are not logged in, and downloading another app to redesign the 404 page to display and login or register message instead but this is far from ideal.

Can anyone help please as I have pretty much reached the depths of my knowledge getting this far.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Rob

  • That plugin has not been updated in almost two years and it seems you are not alone with that issue. It most likely is not compatible any longer.

Yes Keith, the website for the author has not been updated for a long time either, so I think I will be out of luck there.
The annoying thing is I just cannot find anything else that looks as if it will do the job, others come close, but all have one critical thing missing – such as protecting posts but not pages etc.
I wasn’t able to find anyone else having the issue specifically with this plug in though?

You can password protect pages in the editor. That’s not what your looking for?

Or check out this plugin https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/user-access-manager/

Thanks for your help with this Keith. I think I am going to have to properly review the plugin you suggested. I know I did look over it before, but came to the conclusion it would not work for some reason.
I think it was probably because I want everyone to have access to the site as long as they are logged in, if they have not setup an account (ie registered and logged in) then I only want them to be able to see the home page and menus, which need to work and display properly, but to simply direct the user to register and login if they click on anything else other than the home page.
I cannot recall why I thought this plugin would not do that when I looked at it before, so will have to take a proper look.
    Thanks again for the suggestion.

    Keith,
Just wanted to say thanks again. I have downloaded and installed the User Access Manager, rejigged a few pages, and it has allowed me to do exactly what I needed to, and in the process get rid of the plugin that had not moved on in years.
