I’m using Jetpack 2.5 and am having a couple of problems with Publicize:

1 – I’m using a YOURLs plugin to replace the wp.me URLs with my own custom URLs. Publicize is set to post to Facebook and Twitter. The custom short URLs are used for Twitter but not for Facebook.

2 – Clicking the share buttons on any given post results in a 404 not found.

Any help on either of these 2 issues would be greatly appreciates.

    Thanks,
    Dave

  • I am having a similar problem. I have been working with WP Engine to resolve it. They recommend I reach out to JetPack so here I am. ??

Basically the issue I am having is that the cache isn’t being rebuilt to include the short link so it 404’s where the normal permalink works fine.

Here is what WP Engine has advised: https://cloud.tunas.co/image/2B0o143q0Y1o

    Where are you hosted, Dave?

@mike Zielonka: It is impolite to interrupt another poster’s ongoing thread unless you are posting a solution or suggestion. It causes significant problems for the forum’s volunteers and prevents us from being able to track issues by topic. Please post your own topic.

@esmi – I agree completely. I was half done writing that topic but I i thought it would be more helpful to see if I can help Dave out before taking care of myself. ??

@golddave Could you post your site URL here, so I can have a look?

I have tested this a few times today and figured out what was causing the problem but another problem came up as a result. In playing around with settings I turned off Google+ and everything started to work normally except that the image being used, which I assumed would be the Gravatar for the user posting if there is no featured image, is actually another image on the page. Any thoughts?

@golddave: As per the Forum Welcome, please post your own topic.

@esmi This is my own topic. Created the original post in this topic.

My profound apologies. This is what happens when people butt into your topic. Things get confusing very quickly.

Could you post a link to one of your posts so I can have a closer look, or send us an email and mention this thread?

    Thanks!

Two things to note with this post:
1 – The image sent to Facebook is the envelope image above the post.
2 – The custom short URL (used above) was not sent to Facebook. (It used https://nothing.golddave.com/2013/10/22/2398/?fb_source=pubv1.)

1 – The image sent to Facebook is the envelope image above the post.

It seems you haven’t inserted any image into that post, and didn’t define any Featured Image either. In such cases, Facebook will pick an image at random on the page when building the post preview.

If you would like to add a default fallback image to be used by Facebook when you don’t insert any image into your post, you can follow the instructions here:
    https://jetpack.me/2013/10/15/add-a-default-fallback-image-if-no-image/

2 – The custom short URL (used above) was not sent to Facebook.

That’s correct. Jetpack Publicize uses the full post URL.

I thought Jetpack used the Gravatar of the person posting when no image is in the post which is what I was expecting on this post. Am I misinformed?

Is there a plugin I can use to post using the custom URL? Publicize is useless to me if I can’t post with my custom URLs.

    Thanks.

    And what about this?: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/publicize-doesnt-use-own-url-shortener?replies=20#post-3614493

    You said in that post:

if you use a custom URL shortener like Bit.ly or Yourls, Publicize will use your custom shortlink instead of the wp.me shortlink.

That’s exactly what I’m asking about but it’s not working.

Jetpack only uses the Gravatar as a fallback image in the Top Posts & Pages widget. You could add it to the Open Graph tags using the tip I mentioned above.

if you use a custom URL shortener like Bit.ly or Yourls, Publicize will use your custom shortlink instead of the wp.me shortlink.

Is there a plugin I can use to post using the custom URL? Publicize is useless to me if I can’t post with my custom URLs.

In my tests, I found that most of these plugins will allow you to use a custom shortened URL with links posted to Twitter via Publicize, but not always with Facebook. Which plugin are you using at the moment? Could you try using this one?

I’m using URL Shortener (https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/url-shortener/). I can’t use the plugin you suggest because I’m not using bit.ly. I’m using a self hosted instance of YOURLs.
