Same tag, different language?

    Can I add the same tag to different languages, i.e. to different posts of one language?

    My site displays paintings, so I create posts based on images uploaded to the site. One categorization (tag) is year painted, e.g. “2000-2010” and that same tag would of course be used on both the english post and the french post; the problem is that the site does not allow me to add a tag declared as a french tag to an english post.

    Yes you can, but you must choose a different slug because WordPress does not allow you to use the same slug for two different tags.
    For example:
    English: My tag -> my-tag
    French: My tag -> my-tag-fr
