open URL is same window / shortcode

Hi
How do i tell a link to open in the same window (in a shortcode command)?

I am using symple shortcodes but not sure if that matters
it says set target as self or blank
so i have tried
target=”self”
=”_self”
=self and
=_self

but it keeps opening in a new window

any help appreciated by a novice (to wp)
