• I changed the theme of the blog and the sharing buttons after each post disappeared. I deactivated and reactivated the Simple sharing plugin, which had been working. Finally I deactivated it and hoped WP Sharing would take over. It didn’t. Is it the theme? A plugin conflict? Why would they disappear?

  • There is no WP sharing.

What’s the SHARING SETTINGS option that comes up under Settings? It lets you publicize on social media sites and also has a sharing button setup section? Is this from some plugin?

Yes, likely a plugin. Maybe JetPack?

Everything was working until I upgraded to WP 3.7.1. I did it through the WP dashboard. Should I have used my host’s manager instead? (For the future?)

    No.

Some details would be helpful – What theme are you using? What plugins are currently active or what do you want to use for sharing? Link to your site?

I’m using Preference Lite. I switched from Magazine. I’m sure I saw the share buttons when I switched but perhaps I just assumed they were there. I was using Simple Share buttons Adder but when it stopped working, I went to the WP Share setup under Settings. But that didn’t work either. I installed Share Buttons by Add to Any and that seemed to work. So, bottom line, I’m ok with what we have now but would like to know where the problem lies should it happen again. The site is https://saywowmarketing.com Thanks.

There’s really no way to predict if or when a particular plugin might conflict with another plugin or a different theme or even a new version of WP (plugin authors should test for compatibility, but not all do). Generally, best to use plugins that are currently maintained and actively supported – looking at the support forum and reviews for the plugin can be useful in this regard.

If you run into problems, standard troubleshooting is to dectivate/reactivate your plugins to see if that helps. If not, try switching to a default theme and test again – that helps identify if it’s a problem with the theme you are using. If still not working, ask on the specific theme/plugin’s forum(s).
