    Hi there,

I’m carrying out some updates and performance enhancements to a WordPress site that has not had any updates applied for quite some time ( 3 years)

The original version of WordPress was 3.1, which I’ve updated to 3.71 by manually downloading and installing the files, the database upgrades ran, and all appears to be working fine, except none of the plugin updates are now being displayed.

The admin area is showing all plugins to be up to date – I know they are not – none of them have been updated for 3 years, and looking at the plugin sites, I can see later versions available.

I was wondering if I should have incrementally updated the core vesions – something like 3.1 > 3.3 > 3.5 > 3.7 – could that be the problem with the lack of plugn updates showing ?

I ran a query on the database to set the _site_transient_update_plugins value to blank – I can see a new value is there now, and yet, no plugin updates are being notified.

    Any ideas ?

I have a full back up of the original database from version 3.1, and all of the files, so I can revert to that and incrementally update if that’s essential – any advise would be appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Mark

Possibly yes. Ideally, you should have carried out a series of smaller manual upgrades as recommended in Upgrading_WordPress_Extended.

Do you have a pre-upgrade database backup?

Yep, I have everything backed up esmi – am i best to go 2 versions at a time :

    3.1 > 3.3 > 3.5 > 3.7

    Or even smaller increments ?

    Thanks,

I wouldn’t try going above 2 versions in a single upgrade. From our overall experience, keeping to upgrades of 2 major versions or below minimises the risk of database damage. The upgrade steps you outlined above see to be a reasonable approach to me.

Just remember to make a new backup after each successful upgrade. And do turn off all plugins and switch to 3.1 default theme (2010?) before starting the process. I’d also ignore any notices to upgrade the theme until the entire process is complete.
