Uninstall of w3 Total Cache Crashes whole WP site

That happened to me once.

There are other files that are not uninstalled when you do the uninstall so you have to find them manually.

Go back in via FTP and if I remember, look in your WP Content folder and delete these files,
object-cache.php.
advanced-cache.php.
db.php.

Then see if you can get back into your site.

Your htaccess also may have a bunch of code in it from the plugin too.

i faced the same issue , i followed the steps now i got out from error but now i cant ablt to install my plugins which is added earlier. i cant able to install the plugins.

Having a lot of problem when uninstaling W3tc!! My worpress crashed. Cant’t find these files object-cache.php. advanced-cache.php. db.php

same here, such files are not existent… so we are not able to delete or alter those?

Same problem here. I had to try to manually uninstall, as I received a 500 internal server error when trying to deactivate the plugin. Back to WP Super Cache.

If you need to manually remove W3 Total Cache, here are the steps to take:

1. Remove the WordPress drop-ins: Depending on what caching types were active, you may see advanced-cache.php, object-cache.php, and/or db.php in your wp-content directory. You should delete these.
2. Delete w3-total-cache plugin folder: Delete /wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/ to deactivate the plugin itself. You won’t lose your settings by doing this, don’t worry.
3. Edit your wp-config.php file: If page caching was active, you should see a line in your wp-config.php file that contains the following text: define('WP_CACHE', true); — you can carefully delete this line, and it’s recommended that you make a backup of this file before doing so.
4. Edit your .htaccess file: For sites running the Apache web server, W3 Total Cache writes rules in the .htaccess file based on your settings. These rules sit between sections that say “# BEGIN W3TC [caching type]” and “# END W3TC [caching type]” — you can carefully delete these sections, and it’s recommended that you make a backup of this file before doing so.

That’s it.

A few things to remember:

1. W3 Total Cache is a framework that deeply integrates with WordPress and while each release reduces the chances that W3 Total Cache installation/removal will fail, it’s possible that something will go wrong—all software has bugs, whether you can see them or not.
2. If your web server or PHP aren’t running with the proper permissions, the automatic installation (or removal) of W3 Total Cache may fail. This could result in you seeing a message when trying to access your site (the backend in particular) about certain files being out of place that need to be re-installed or removed. To address this, navigate to the file in question (advanced-cache.php, object-cache.php, and/or db.php in your wp-content directory) and delete them.
3. If you decide not to use W3 Total Cache, it’s recommended that you deactivate and then delete it through the Dashboard. Manually deleting the plugin folder without doing first deactivating properly (which allows W3 Total Cache to “clean up after itself” will at best result in additional cleanup needed and as worst result in portions of your site being inaccessible until all files are removed.
4. It’s important to address all of the steps above even if your site appears to be running correctly.

Note – Step 3 not done as there is no text define(‘WP_CACHE’, true); in wp-config.php file.

Willie Jackson- Thanks for that info on editing the wp-config and htaccess files! My site was not down but I was receiving these errors and those edits removed the errors.

Hi there,

I run a small business and I’ve got a connected problem to the thread above. Basically, our wordpress site went down in magnificent fashion. We contacted our web design company (who host the site on their servers) to have a look. They claim the site has been hacked and will charge us to rectify this issue. So I went into the dashboard and saw this error message..

W3 Total Cache Error: some files appear to be missing or out of place

I contacted them again because I couldn’t find the reference anywhere online that the error above is connected to being hacked. No response.

I don’t see advanced-cache.php, object-cache.php, and/or db.php in wp-content.

There is no define(‘WP_CACHE’, true); in wp-config.php

There is no W3C addition to .htaccess

OK, I have just solved my W3C uninstall problem which was that the .htaccess file did have the W3C addition and it was making it impossible to upgrade or rather reinstall WP4 and in OP2 it could not alter the setting in the overlay optimizer.

Both now are working!

Understanding that I now can proceed to a new wC3 install without fear and BTW I got one site from 3.3 sec to 1.1 load time – phenomenal on a crappy basic server account.
