Problem with building static home page

Hello, I have been trying to build a static home page that displays extracts from 3 or 4 categories. I have used the example code from the Wiki and this works partially.

I have two problems:

1. The footer seems to be appearing on the side and not the bottom. I have been playing with the code, but can’t seem to get this to work correctly. (I can get the page to work with a single category)

2. The loop works, but the hyperlinks to the items don’t. It seems to be using the index.php from my static page rather than the seperate index.php for word press.

I have installed Word press into a directory called WP and built the static page as index.php in the root.

I am sure it is something like a missing div or something fairly simple, but its not obvious!!

Can anyone help with this please?
