I made a WP site for a client a while ago, and they just contacted me to to let me know that the admin pages are only rendering the menu right now. Trying to get more information, but here is what it looks like once you log in

I don’t think they’ve added any plug-ins, and they update the content pretty regularly, so I don’t know what could be causing it. I took a look at the code, and this is in the body of the page

: Access to undeclared static property: WP_Screen::$this in /homepages/30/d233389340/htdocs/wp-admin/includes/screen.php on line 706

I’m not sure what the root cause is though. Any thoughts?

  • I came on here tonight looking to solve the exact same problem. I’ve been seeing just the left side menu for the past 24 hours at least.

Haven’t done a thing to the site to cause it, nor can I figure out how to fuss with anything while not having access to any of the admin pages.

I hope someone can help troubleshoot.

I had the same problem at my bozgurd.info blog.

Open wp-admin/includes/screen.php file and delete strings 706 to 708

However, make a bakcup of the original screen.php

No! Never, ever, edit WordPress core scripts. And do not encourage others to do so. Editing core scripts can bring down your entire site and/or open security holes for hackers to use.

@chenryhen: Why are you using an old copy of WordPress? Were you aware that your site is currently running a very real risk of being hacked? You need to upgrade WordPress asap.

As a web developer I check several times the entire system even after I’ve hidden the WordPress version.

@esmi: I wasn’t contracted to do web admin, just the site design and development. I believe my contact with the client was going in to upgrade actually, and that’s when she noticed the problem.

Just confirmed : no new plugins since the site launched. I’m still mystified :/

@chenryhen a question: is the site hosted on BlueHost? I was just contacted about the same issue and I’m thinking that maybe BlueHost changed something in their PHP installation to cause this issue? I am currently looking into it and will reply with details if I figure anything out.

After talking to BlueHost support, it seems they are phasing out support for PHP 5.2 and automatically switched my site over to PHP 5.4. Reverting it to PHP 5.2 fixed the problem.

@ryangiglio thanks for the tip! I’ll ask the client to check with their host.

@ryangiglio You are correct sir! I had the same problem after a client tried to update wordpress on bluehost. Changed php back to 5.2 via control panel php config and everthing is back to normal.

Forgot to follow up on this!

Yup, the PHP upgrade to 5.4 was the issue. The client worked it out with the webhost and got back her access to the admin panel. Thanks all
