    I need to update my Preference Lite theme and have a child theme related question. I’ve read the child theme page on wordpress and in the preference lite tutorials.

    The tutorials say that there should be a child theme folder installed in my files directory but I didn’t see one there, I checked all folders under the theme in my c-panel.

    In my dashboard, I found one tab under Appearances that says ‘Edit CSS’ which is separate from the ‘Editor’ with all the files in it.

    The Edit CSS has this code and some options on the side:

    /*
    Welcome to Custom CSS!

    CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is a kind of code that tells the browser how
    to render a web page. You may delete these comments and get started with
    your customizations.

    By default, your stylesheet will be loaded after the theme stylesheets,
    which means that your rules can take precedence and override the theme CSS
    rules. Just write here what you want to change, you don't need to copy all
    your theme's stylesheet content.
    */

    Is this the child theme or should I follow all the instructions on the WordPress page below and create a new Child theme. In which case can you give me the exact theme name and template information.

    Thanks…

  • That “Edit CSS” is most likely due to the jetpack plugin, it is not a child theme.

    That looks like part of the JetPack plugin as batharoy mentioned…if you are just needing to do css editing and don’t plan on ever modifying other code from the theme files, then that works wonders for CSS editing.

    The Child theme for Preference lite is in the theme files in a folder named “child-theme” and in that is a zip file that you install. I just double checked and it’s there.

    Thanks batharoy and Styled Themes…helps to know this.

    I checked again for the child-theme folder in my file manager-wp-content-themes-preference lite, no luck, it’s not there. One possible explanation could be that I haven’t updated since I took on this theme in April ’13.

    Can you possibly give me the theme name and template info, I’ve read that entry is critical for setting up the child-theme?

    Makes sense about the child theme missing then… definitely should update because there’s been a lot of fixes and changes done. Or, at minimum, download the current version, unzip it and then inside that you can use that child theme. But I would recommend you update (please note that if you made any changes to core theme files, they will be overwritten).

    Thanks, good idea. That’s exactly what I’ve heard- not updating the theme could be a risk.

    Appreciate your help.
