How to set up a slideshow that starts on the first slide and manually advances

NEXTGen appears to be the best photo plugin out there…I do a lot of this work and will upgrade to the Pro version if I can get NEXTGen to work.
I want to do the most basic thing a slideshow can do — start on the first slide and let the user manually advance, 1 through n. I have gone through all the settings that are needed to do this, but it does not work. In all cases I get a slideshow that starts in a random place, and automatically shows random slides.
