Taxonomy AJAX not working in admin

    In the Dashboard/admin, if I go to posts > categories, enter the required information and click “Add new category” nothing happens.

    Firefox shows this Javascript error:
    Error: XML or text declaration not at start of entity
    Source File: https://www.mysite.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category
    Line: 2, Column: 1

    If I try deleting a category/taxonomy, the background flashes red as expected, but it does not disappear. At the top of the page it reports:
    An unidentified error has occurred.

    Occasionally I get little blips in the edit post page too e.g. clicking “Preview changes” doesn’t always work.

    I’ve tried deactivating all plugins but it made no difference. I tested in the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox and have the same issue in both.
