Hello, thanks for a great theme! I have a bunch of YouTube videos displayed in the slider and if I resize the browser window, the currently displayed video resizes fine, growing and shrinking as i resize the window.

However, if I _then_ use the slider controls to navigate to the next videos, they all show up as tiny thumbnails, until I get back to the first video (the one that was visible when I resized). With one of the thumbnail-sized videos displayed, if I _then_ resize the browser window again, the video snaps to the correct size. But _then_ if I navigate to another video, I’m back to tiny thumbnails.

Thought it might have been just my installation, but the same thing occurs if I visit the Sundance test site and perform the above resizing ritual: https://sundancedemo.wordpress.com/ It doesn’t seem to be peculiar to YouTube videos, as there’s a variety of different source vids in the Sundance demo.

Have tried this in various browsers and on mobile, and the behaviour is the same. In fact there are additional problems in Safari – for example, when the page first loads, the slider is displaying the first ‘sticky’ video but then the next featured video that should be in the slider appears below it, and stays floating there even if you scroll the page.

Hope someone can point me in the right direction because this theme ticks a lot of other boxes for me! Thanks

    Waz

Hi Waz, glad you like Sundance!

I took a look at the theme demo and used the arrows to navigate from one slide to the next, all looks fine.

Could you let me know the use case of resizing the browser window in the middle of moving from one slider screen to the next? I’m not sure this is something we’d test or account for in the theme, since normally once you’ve started interacting with the site you aren’t going to be changing the browser window size.

I tested the slider in Safari 7.0.2 and it’s working fine for me there. Could you please let me know what version of Safari you’re using? Thanks.

Helo Kathryn, thanks for the response.

I wasn’t referring to ‘resizing in the middle of moving from one slider screen to the next’. Here are the steps that reveal the problem:

    1) Navigate to the theme demo and allow it to load fully. Navigate through a few of the slides, if you like, to confirm they have loaded and are displaying correctly.

    2) With any of the slides displayed, resize the browser window (make it smaller) to a sufficient extent that the video resizes. Don’t do this during a navigation – just when the slide is stationary.

    3) Now, using the arrows, navigate to another slide. I think you will find that some or all of the other videos no longer display properly, appearing as a tiny thumbnail-like blotch.

It may be helpful for you to try this at my own site where the slider is loading a larger number of videos: https://www.garagenight.tv/ I’ve not finished working on this redesign but will leave the theme active so that you can check

It is commonplace for someone to resize their browser window when navigating around a site, so I feel this is a significant problem. I’m guessing that the theme is scaling the videos at a certain size in the background – according to the browser window size at first load – but if the browser window is resized, it only rescales the video that is currently displayed, so the sizing gets messed up.

I have tried this across various browsers, on Mac, PC and mobile, and found the same problem on each occasion.

Thanks for the additional info and steps. I do see what you’re referring to.

I wasn’t referring to ‘resizing in the middle of moving from one slider screen to the next’.

Apologies for not being clear there. I did in fact mean what you said later: “resizing their browser window when navigating around a site.”

I’ll ask our developers to to have a look at this and will keep you posted here.

Thanks Kathryn, I take it you’ve been able to reproduce the problem. Great to hear that the developers will be taking a look. I have seen posts on the web about resizing problems with Flexslider. Seems like it might be to do with the java code and when the sizing event is fired for the slider contents, though I’m afraid I have zero literacy in this field.

In any case, keen for a resolution and thanks so much for giving this your attention.

Our developer has implemented a change in the way Sundance displays videos responsively, at different screens sizes. You can see it in action on the WordPress.com demo site: https://sundancedemo.wordpress.com/

We aim to get the new video functionatlity incorporated into Jetpack, tentatively called Jetpack Responsive Videos. Once that’s been released, we’ll put a new version of Sundance that takes advantage of the new video functionality.

Hello Kathryn, I really appreciate you following this up, and what you’ve outlined is great to hear.

Is there any way I could incorporate this change at my site in the meantime, until the permanent fix is put in place?

I’m very keen to resolve this issue so I can move forward with a redesign using Sundance as its basis. Thanks.

I spoke with our developer and our best advice is to hang in there until Jetpack takes on the responsive videos functionality, as this isn’t a simple change in the theme – multiple files and pieces of code are affected. We hope to get the responsive videos into Jetpack soon – you might want to follow their blog for updates on new features: https://jetpack.me/news/
