How to remove date and author

hi, i have been trying to remove the date and author from my posts for a couple of days unsuccessfully.
i am using the twenty twelve theme and i have created a child theme for it.
the code related is in functions.php
i have tried several times to modify the code but i just can’t get it right. i have no coding knowledge for that matter.
please help!
