• WP Retina 2x is creating the @2 files in my upload directly but apparently these images are not being served. I’ve been running the plugin using Retina.js method and with the Debug Mode turned on. I thought that the Debug Mode forced the use of the retina images.

When I look at the source code for the site, the original images without the @2 are being used. I’m testing this on a subdomain and did try the .htaccess mods suggested, but the site stops working when I add ‘RewriteRule ^files/(.+) wp-content/plugins/wp-retina-2x/wr2x_image.php?ms=true&file=$1 [L]’. I’m using the Themeforest City Government theme and the WP Retina 2x plugin came bundled with it.

Any ideas on where to start searching?

@2x files, not @2, otherwise there is a problem already.
No need of Rewrite Rules with the Retina.js method.
Check if you browser is trying to load those @2x files and if the script (retina.js) is actually loaded.
