facebook and twitter counter resets to zero after changing the category

  • I am using wordpress for my site.

    I recently changed a post from one category to another. so the url got changed

    previous url: sitename.com/category1/post1 (shows facebook likes 11, twitter 12
changed url: sitename.com/category2/post1 (shows facebook likes 0, twitter 0)

    so what can i do now so that i can get back my likes.

  • You’ll have to change it back to the original category name.

    Facebook and Twitter have registered the likes on that specific (first) URL, so if you change that, you’ll see the number that Facebook and Twitter have registered for the second URL, which is 0.

    isnt there any other way out. because i want to change the url at any cost.

    Well, if “any cost” includes resetting the Facebook/Twitter counts…..

    The only way (that I know of) is to hardcode the counters to make them point to the old URL — that way they will show the old numbers. However, when people then Like the page, that will also refer to the old URL, so whenever one of their followers checks out the Like, they will end up on the old URL.

    To fix that, you’ll have to add a 301 redirect to your .htaccess.
