Issues with jetpack and users

I installed JetPack and activated several of its components but see none of it working…

I get several ‘new user registrations’ yet I see very few comments posted and see no place on the site for them to ‘register.’ How are they doing this and what good does it do? Is wordpress sending them notifications when I update or something?

Also I tried to set up my comments so they’re posted when written but that doesn’t work either. I have to ‘approve’ them when I check for spam. Can this be corrected? I thought jetpack was going to install a different comment system but it looks the same.
