I was able to figure out all the steps to roll back to a previous version of Google XML Sitemaps (delete DB options, rename and delete files, etc) except for this one issue with Google Webmaster Tools seeing Number of children in this Sitemap index X instead of the total number of URL’s in the older XML file. Is this a DB option somewhere? Or Virtual Robots issue somewhere? Thanks.

This is odd. When rebuilding the sitemap for version 3.4 the files/filenames that are created are literally .xml and .xml.gz instead of sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz.

The Child thing was just a Google Chrome problem. Google Chrome has some serious issues in the last couple of versions, which anyone who uses Google Chrome is fully aware of. ?? I will figure out the file name writing issue. Probably something simple. I plan on moving forward to 4.0.2 but ran into some technical problems on a site so will do testing in the Lab first before Production.

DB option was the issue. Deleted all DB options, reconfigured and saved – all good.
