• Just installed 3.9 update and now can’t edit pages or posts. There’s just a blank box where there should be text, images and/or HTML. When I click in the textbox it disappears.

I am running Windows 7 and using Chrome. I tried on IE as well with the same result.

[I posted this same message in another thread – Installation – but wasn’t sure if it belonged here instead. Sorry for the repetition.]

  • Try disabling your plugins and then see if it works. I was having a similar problem and narrowed it down to a plugin not compatible with TinyMCE 4.0.

Thank you, laserjobs. I will give that a try and let you know.

Have you tried disabling all of your plugins to see if any of them could be the culprit?

I’ll give that a try. Thanks Jeff!

I also can not edit or create content on posts or pages since my recent update to 3.9.

IS this a backend WP issue that is being worked on?

Please notify how to retrieve editing tools to the posts!!

Hi Jeff, I have the same issues as Clayhut, but I disabled all the plugins but still…I cannot work in the theme -elements such as in a column…

What can I do more? I think the 3.9 version has some child-diseases.

I’m not able to edit in the Visual (TinyMCE) editor either. I’ve tried deactivating all plugins & changing to TwentyThirteen, but the issue persists.

I’m pretty sure it’s a TinyMCE issue somewhere, but I’m not sure where to look or what else to try… Ideas?

I am running Windows 7 and using Chrome.

Visual Editor issues is almost always a js issue (except when it isn’t…) and I’ve just tried on another plugin that has this issue.

Can you try the troubleshooting steps in this Codex link?

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors

If you can do only step #2 (the define('SCRIPT_DEBUG', true); part) and that gets the editor back then that will help find where the problem is.

If that step does not make the editor work can you try step #3? I used Chrome to look at the JavaScript console and it pointed to the culprit very quickly in the error message.

I’m on Safari on a macbook pro and I cannot update either.

If I press the update button it takes me to the edit post instead.

    Hi Jan!
    This is what I get:
“Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property ‘documentBaseURL’ of undefined wp-tinymce.php?c=1&ver=4021-20140412:9”

    (that would be wp-includes/js/tinymce/wp-tinymce.php)

That doesn’t tell me anything. Does it mean something to you?

I’ve had problems in the past getting the js console on Safari working myself, but if you can enable the js counsole and see if there are any messages that may help identify what’s going on with your installation.

It means there’s a JS problem with your installation and that message does help.

Can you try something temporary? Looking at your profile URL it looks like you are running a theme and plugins. That’s fine when it works but to identify what’s messing with the editor you need to strip it down to the bare bones.

It’s only temporary but can you switch to the Twenty Fourteen theme, de-activate all of your plugins, clear your browser’s cache and cookies? Then re-login again and visit it the new post page.

The clearing your cookies and cache are important please don’t forget that step.

I have the same problem as clayhut. I also tried disabling all of theplugins but no luck … please help

Everyone who isn’t clayhut, please make sure you do this:

And THEN you need to make your own topics ?? It’s impossible to help ALL of you in one thread, trust me, I know you’re thinking ‘But it’s the same problem!’ We’ve done this for years, we know how crazy this gets ?? Your own post, with your own list of plugins and your theme is easier to help YOU ?? yes, it’s more work for us, but it’s better for you.
