• Hello,

the blog I’m managing is stemplusd.com
I currently have worpress version 3.8.1. The web host is godaddy and the theme I purchased is Valenti.

I tried to update wordpress to 3.9 verison but I received the 500 Internal Server Error and couldn’t access to the dashboard anymore. So, I changed the name of the plugins folder via FTP. I accessed to the dashboard and rename the folder with the original name. So, I activated all the plugins except for one which gave me the 500 error.
So, I tried again to update wordpress to the 3.9 version, but I received the 500 error. So I did the same process: rename plugins folder, access to dashboard, rename plugins folder. But from that moment I can not activate ANY plugin. I always receive the 500 Internal Server Error. So, I still have the 3.8.1 version and the blog has no plugins. I don’t know what to do. I am desperate and very upset because I’ll have to present the blog on friday. Please help me. I checked my php memory limit and is 128MB.

I’m not an expert in php, css, html, and stuff like that. So be patients please!

    Thanks a lot,
    Luca

  • Try:
    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

    Hi esmi,

    thanks for your reply.
I tried to do what you adviced. I only don’t understand how to run the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php.

I did the first three steps. Then I tried to click on Update Now in the dashboard. It’s 15 minutes that it is saying “Unpacking the update”…

Do you think that the problem is that I need the update?

I noticed also that the log in page sitename.com/wp-admin has changed. The box is no more at the center of the page, but it’s on the left and very simple…

After 30 minutes, I stopped the automatic upload. I am trying againt the manual upload.

    Another question:

do I have to delete all the files that are inside the folder “wordpress” before upload the new ones?

I am replacing everything, but it keeps saying “Uploading files”

Sounds like there’s a problem on your server – which means that (for now) you’ll need to upgrade manually as I suggested above.

do I have to delete all the files that are inside the folder “wordpress” before upload the new ones?

Delete and re-upload all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php & root .htaccess files

Just a guess: Are you using a GoDaddy hosting account?

If so, then I’ll be blunt about it: The only real solution to 500 errors coming from GoDaddy hosting is to stop using GoDaddy hosting.

Their shared servers are not worth trying to figure out or fix. You will continue to have issues constantly until you switch to another hosting service.
