• I have just installed wordpress on a free webhost https://awardspace.com/.
    My blog address is https://aseembehl.awardspace.com/

Is it advisable to start a blog on a free host?I am scared that someday the 200MB they offer will fill up?How much space is generally used in blogging.I mean if I blog 1-2 posts a day.
Also the database they offer is only 10MB, is that enough?

Please tell me if I am making the right move by going for a free host.I dont want to blog for an year and see my efforts wasted. If there is any better free webhost than this please mention.

Also, one more thing that I want to ask is that can I move my blog to some other webhost and domain after maybe an year of blogging?I am asking thuis as, I cannot afford a paid host not but I will in future.

    This is what they offer:

    200MB Disk Space
    5GB Monthly Traffic
    2 Domains Hosting
    5 Subdomains

Thank you for your reply, but can you please answer my queries in detail like

“can I move my blog to some other webhost and domain after maybe an year of blogging?”

“Is 200MB space, 10MB database, 5GB/mo traffic enough for a normal 1-2 posts a day blog?”

“Is there a better free option than this?”

    Thank you in advance

“can I move my blog to some other webhost and domain after maybe an year of blogging?”

That depends on if you are provided full access to your database. If so, then you should be able to.

“Is 200MB space, 10MB database, 5GB/mo traffic enough for a normal 1-2 posts a day blog?”

Normal? For a small to medium- trafficked blog it seems like it would be enough.

“Is there a better free option than this?”

I don’t keep records on free hosting options, so I’ve no idea.

Personally, I have a problem with free hosting offers. There is almost always a catch.

Thank you again for the reply.

You mentioned that I can move to another host if I have full access to the database. How do I know that?I tried the wordpress backup plugin, and used it to download the backup to my blog, it is a .sql file.
Does that mean I will be able to move to another host using this backup?

Also, I have used this webhost for some other sites as well. The only catch I could find is a 500kb file size limit, which I think shouldn’t be a problem for a blog?

I want to be sure before I start blogging on this blog.

Never go for free host. You never know that one day you wake up and phew!!! your blog doesn’t exist.

As mod said .. You get what you pay for.
    [no sigs please]

aseembehl, being able to use the backup plugin should be sufficient (though direct access to the database is always – always – a plus when something goes wrong) for keeping backups. I’d recommend creating your sqldump file through it at least once a week.

Beyond that, I think my point about free hosts has been made. Handy’s suggestion is a good one, too. :)
