header menu styling

Hi

I am struggling to figure out how to style the header menu on my site.
I want to accomplish the following solution.

1. When a menu item is clicked, its background colour must change to a distinct colour eg. red, green, or blue.
2. The hover effect on each menu item must have the same background color, as when the link was clicked.

I am using the responsive theme
