WordPress GB installation auto updating to Alphas?!

  • I had v3.9.1 installed on nine websites, coming back from holiday I find a few messages that something on the site(s) is broken.

    Now I see that the WP installs are all 4.0-alpha and they seem to be updating a few times every day judging by the innumerable emails I’m getting.

    How can I stop the auto-updating permanently and install v3.9.1 and only update stable versions (no Beta or Alphas)?

    Ok, I found another post about changing the version.php to 3.9 from alpha 4.0 and then updated to 3.9.1 which worked. However, now there is no update progress just…

    Downloading update from https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/release/en_GB/wordpress-3.9.1.zip…

    and no messages when the update is complete. I have the same lack of info when I update a plugin; no message that the plugin has updated succesfully (or unsuccessfully). How can I restore this? Thanks.

    There was a bug in the eb-GB package that resulted in WP misidentifying itself as 4.0-alpha. You are actually running 3.9.1. The package was removed as soon as the bug was reported and has been rebuilt. Just run the upgrade again to correct this.

    Yeah, I got the version fixed but still have neither progress messages when updating, nor when completed (for all updates).

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    Thanks for replying a second time esmi!

    I tracked it down to the WP HTTP Compression plugin. Deactivated/deleted and all’s well, thanks.
