First, try deactivating ALL plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s).

    Here are some more information:

The Problems only exists for posts (not for pages).

The Problem changes with different permalink settings:

Permalink Setting ‘Default’: It can not find a post (404 Error).

Permalink Setting ‘Post name’: It can not find the specific post with ‘bad’ URL explaned above: https://example.com/Desktop/http:/exa…/example-post/

Permalink Setting ‘Numeric’: The same problem as ‘Post name’

Permalink Setting ‘Day and name’ and ‘Month and name’: Opens correct post. URL in address bar is correct:
    https://example.com/2014/05/example-post/
but when I put the mouse over the link in the home page it shows the ‘bad’ URL as before: https://example.com/Desktop/http:/exa…/example-post/

Did you try Tara’s tip to deactivate all plugins before you went through the Permalinks examples above? Sometimes SEO plugins can misbehave or be set by user incorrectly.

What theme are you using? Does the problem persist when you switch themes to the default Twenty-Fourteen theme (with all plugins deactivated and Permalinks set to /Post name)?

    Hello,
I deactivated all plugins and the problem still persist (URL, Permalinks…).
Then I changed the theme to Twenty-Fourteen (Permalinks set to /Post name) and it seems everything OK. Also all the other permalink settings are OK except ‘Default’: it gets only 404 Errors for post AND pages.
I’m using the advanced newspaper theme.

    Good job testing and troubleshooting.

However, for the Advanced Newspaper theme you’ll have to contact the site where you got your theme for support with this problem –

Commercial themes, or themes not found in the repository here on www.ads-software.com, are not suppported by this WordPress forum.

    Thanks for your fast answer.
But it’s also not working with Twenty-Fourteen.
Do you have an idea what it could mean when the ‘Default’ permalink settings are getting a 404 Error? Can I reset/check these settings in the database etc.?
