• Last night I thought I had a big problem with my site (www.eckernet.com), my main page would show up just fine but everytime I tried to click on any link on the page, whether it was a permalink to a specific post, or a page on my site, I would get a server 404 error.

And it wasn’t even my 404 error. It was the standard one, and since I have a 404.php file I know that’s bad. I was just starting to panic last night when suddenly it began working just fine again.

Ok whatever, then today when I try to click on something on my page, the 404 errors are back for everything. Pages, comments, archive links, etc. Nothing seems to work.

I haven’t even done anything to my site. And the weird thing is that the main page appears to work just fine, but nothing else.

    Please help…

  • Do you think it’s a database problem with your host?
Can you get to your database through your host’s control panel?

Don’t think so, I can get to the database just fine and everything appears in order. Besides, the main page displays just fine so it’s pulling those 10 entries just fine.

I’ve even used my IP address instead of the domain and it fails.

Not a Theme problem either as if I change themes it still fails.

    Here’s something interesting: https://eckernet.com/?p=08

This returns your WP 404. Do you think your permalinks got messed up? Were you using customized ones?

I think it’s your permalinks. Adding the ? got me a real page.

you’re search returned the site structure with /index.php/
This is common when you turn permalinks on while using IIS. Are you using IIS? If so, you’ll have to do some hacking to get permalinks to work.

I’m using custom permalinks because I used to use MoveableType and I wanted to keep my permalinks intact…

Ok this is REALLY goofy. I just went into options/permalinks. And I didn’t touch a think…I just clicked the update permalinks button, and suddenly everything works…

    Anyone understand that one??

IIS? My host is using Apache

Well… at least its working for now…

A little concerned that this appears to happen without cause and at random but at least I know the fix for it when it does.

Would definitely appreciate anyone’s input on what might be triggering it.
